As a newbie I'm not quite sure why but I've seen lots of people talking on trade and forum saying they are farming specific iron/life/frost etc relics ... and other trinkets.

Can someone please explain simply why is this? what's the point? Is there something I'm missing? If there is anything else that I should know?
