I think "exclusive rewards" are essential for a immersive epic RPG adventure.
We are all roleplayers like it or not and one cannot argue about the epicness of a limited edition item. It's a collectors dream.
This items can work as an incentive to "step out of your box" and try to engage a little more difficult content.
If the skill discrepancy is too great then chances are this person will NOT even try to do said content BUT if it's moderately within his/her skill range...they will try and do it for sure!
